Shortly after being released from prison in Laramie, Wyoming for stealing horses, Butch Cassidy purchased a Colt Single Action Army Revolver from the Ashley Co-Op which was a hardware store located on Vernal’s Main Street in 1896. In the early 1900’s in an unsuccessful attempt to gain amnesty Butch turned the Colt #158402 and holster along with a Winchester 1873 carbine over to Utah authorities in good faith. The gun got the nickname “Amnesty Colt” and is the most documented of Cassidy’s guns. During the 1896-1900, while Cassidy carried the Colt there was a string of notorious robberies including: a bank in Montpelier, Idaho, a railroad station in Castle Gate, Utah, and a Union Pacific Railroad flier near Wilcox, Wyoming.
Fun Fact: the inside of the gun’s grip contains yet another Cassidy legend — a series of numbers that supposedly are the combination of a bank-vault stash possibly in Denver, Colorado.
On September 30, 2012, Long famous .45 caliber gun once owned by Butch Cassidy was sold at an auction in Southern California for $175,000 from an anonymous online bidder.
